Do you need coverage with or without a car?
I own or lease a car
Get coverage for your vehicle and help arranging the required filing. Choose liability coverage and other required protection, or add comprehensive and collision for covered damage to your own car.
I don't own a car
You may still need to maintain an insurance filing. Non-owner coverage may be an option for an eligible driver who doesn't own a vehicle. Tell us about cars you regularly use or can access at home, too.

I need to understand a notice
A suspension notice can raise a lot of questions. Which form do you need? Which state needs it? What happens after it's submitted? Start with the requirement on your notice, then work through the insurance steps.
Choose your state
Choose the state requesting your proof of insurance. You’ll find coverage information, filing requirements, and official contacts for checking your record.

What is SR-22 insurance?
An SR-22 is a certificate of financial responsibility. It tells the state that you have the required insurance. It isn't a separate policy, and it doesn't add collision coverage or increase your liability limits by itself.
Your policy provides the coverage. The SR-22 documents that insurance for the state. Your insurance provider handles the certificate when that filing is available and appropriate for your situation. See the Illinois Secretary of State's explanation.
Minnesota uses its own insurance-certification process for certain cases. An SR-22 required by another state is a separate question. Your Minnesota guide explains the difference.
How much will it cost?
Your price depends on your driver information, the coverage you need, and your state's requirements. Owning a car, driving history, location, and the vehicle itself can change the quote.
Before you choose a policy, check the initial payment, the remaining payment schedule, and the coverage included. Our cost guide also shows client averages for six-month policies, with paying in full presented separately from installments.
| What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Coverage type | Non-owner coverage and insurance for your own car aren't interchangeable. |
| Limits and deductibles | A lower price can come with less protection or a larger amount you pay after a covered loss. |
| Initial payment | This is the amount needed to start—not necessarily a regular monthly installment. |
| Total policy cost | This puts the payment plan in context for the full policy term. |
How to request coverage and a filing
Start your quote. Tell us your state, whether you own a vehicle, and what your notice requires.
Review your coverage and payment details. Make sure the policy fits your driving situation and you understand what you're paying.
Confirm the insurance and filing steps. Coverage must be put in force and the correct filing arranged. Your state's processing and any remaining reinstatement conditions are separate.
Submitting a quote request does not start coverage, complete an SR-22 filing, or restore driving privileges. We will explain what still needs to happen.
Common SR-22 insurance questions
Can I get SR-22 insurance without a car?
Yes, if you qualify. Non-owner insurance may work for an eligible driver who doesn't own a vehicle. It isn't a workaround for insuring a car you own, lease, or regularly use. See how non-owner coverage works.
Does an SR-22 mean I need full coverage?
Not by itself. The filing requirement and the protection you choose for your car are separate. Comprehensive and collision may be important—or required by your lender—even when they aren't required just because of an SR-22. Compare coverage choices.
Can I start online?
Yes. You can begin by requesting a quote. Coverage, payment, and filing details still need to be confirmed before anything is in effect.
How quickly can my SR-22 be processed?
The answer depends on your state, the submission method, and whether the information matches your record. Electronic submission does not necessarily mean immediate state acceptance. See what happens after a filing.
Can I drive after I buy the policy?
Only when you have the required coverage and valid driving privileges. An insurance policy does not remove every suspension, court condition, or reinstatement requirement. Check your status with the state before driving.
